Did you know that Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is completely safe during pregnancy — after the first trimester?
During the first 12 weeks, it’s best to avoid any massage treatments, as this early stage is sensitive and we, as therapists, want to prioritize clients and your baby’s safety.
After 12 weeks, MLD can be incredibly beneficial, especially for easing swelling in the legs and supporting better circulation.
Here’s how I approach MLD for pregnancy:
✔️I make sure the client is comfortable — adjusting the bed to a 45-degree angle or positioning you on your side depending on how far along you are.
✔️I use gentle breathing techniques to help the client relax and feel calm.
✔️I avoid heavy fragrances and don’t use essential oils, respecting the client’s heightened sensitivity.
✔️And importantly — I do not massage the belly. I believe that’s a sacred space for mum to bond with the baby, that is my personal preference.
Instead, I focus on stimulating lymph nodes, gently working on the arms, legs, and other areasto reduce swelling and promote a feeling of lightness and well-being.
Every session is about making a client feel supported, pampered, and safe.
Comfort and the baby’s well-being are always my top priority.
